Description

The Cross Hands Hotel and a mounting block date to the late 17th century, with later additions in the mid- to late-18th century. The hotel stands on the B4040, with a long west elevation fronting the A46.

The entrance elevation is of rubble construction with ashlar dressings and quoins, featuring a tiled roof with the lowest two courses of Cotswold stone tiles. It has coped verges and ashlar stacks. The building is three storeys high with four windows, most of which are 19th-century two- and three-light casements with stone mullions and dripmoulds. A single-storey stone bay is located to the left, featuring glazing bar windows. A sundial and two fire insurance plaques are positioned between the first and second windows. Two two-storey extensions extend to the right, constructed from rubble with mixed slate and Cotswold stone tile roofs, and incorporating four glazing bar sash windows and a mix of modern casements. The ground floor includes large vehicle openings.

The west elevation, originally comprising at least two houses, is of coursed squared rubble, with a tiled roof and ashlar stacks. It is one and two storeys high, with eight windows; all are glazing bar sashes set within moulded stone architraves. A rendered segmental portico with a Tuscan plan stands to the left, featuring a cornice and parapet. To the right is a two-storey bay with a parapet; it contains a six-panelled door within a moulded stone architrave, topped by a flat hood supported on stone scrolled brackets. A mounting block of three steps is situated between the door and the bay.
