Description
Home Farmhouse is an early to mid-17th century building situated on the south side of Badminton Road, Sodbury. The main elevation faces west and is rendered with freestone dressings and quoins. It has a Cotswold stone slate roof with coped verges and paired diagonal stacks. The house is two storeys and attics, originally comprising three bays with outer Cotswold gables featuring ball finials. A central, advanced two-storey tower porch is a prominent feature. Windows are leaded casements; those in the attics have three lights with reserved chamfered mullions, while ground and first floor windows have four lights with king mullions, all contained within large relieving arches and under dripmoulds with returns. The porch has a two-light, mullioned casement window, an ovolo moulded square-headed door frame, and a plank door with strap hinges.
The north elevation displays two gables and remnants of a lead downpipe with repousse masks and cherubs. A depressed arch-headed door is set under a flat stone hood on brackets.
The interior remains substantially intact, featuring tie-beam and collar trusses. A central passage runs through the house, with a hall to the left, a parlour to the right, a kitchen in the north-east wing, and a former dairy in the south-east wing. A large stair turret connects the rear wings, containing a newel stair.
The house is a good example of its period, notable for details such as moulded Tudor arch fireplaces, moulded door surrounds, ogee and unusual hollow-convex mouldings, and decorative iron catches on the attic windows. A report by L. Hall is held in the National Monuments Record.
