Description

The Old Sodbury Memorial Lychgate is a churchyard lych gate built around 1920. It is made of oak and stands on a stone plinth, topped with a tiled roof. The structure is rectangular and features gables on its east and west sides.

The oak frame includes corner posts with chamfered corners that rest on the coursed stone plinth. Each side has two bays, with arched braces at the top. The east and west fronts have trusses with a slender tie beam, above which are queen posts that support a collar. This collar holds a single purlin on each side. The lower section has a pair of gates on the east side and a single pedestrian gate attached to the lych gate. These gates and the timber uprights forming the backs of the benches on either side appear to have been renewed.

The eastern tie beam features an inscription on its east side that reads ‘LEST WE FORGET / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE’. The west gable is inscribed with ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’. Sixteen names of the fallen are recorded on the flanks. Additionally, on the west side of the eastern truss, there is an inscription that states ‘THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939-1945’, along with the names of four individuals who fell during the second world war.
