Description
The Farlow War Memorial lych-gate is a churchyard memorial that appears to date from around 1920. It is constructed of limestone rubble, laid to course, with an oak roof structure covered in tiles. The gate faces southeast towards the road and northwest towards the church porch.
The exterior features a round-arched portal flanked by rock-hewn stone piers and radiating voussoirs around the arch. Ashlar eaves bands are located at the level of the springing of the arch on either side. The central keystone, also made of ashlar, bears the inscription: ‘TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE FROM THIS / PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919 / THIS LYCH / GATE IS / ERECTED BY THE / PARISHIONERS’. At the apex of the gable is a small wheel-head cross. A pair of wrought iron gates, featuring S-scrolls and circles, seem to be replacements but may mimic the original design. The flanks consist of plain walling, and the northwest side includes a pegged oak truss with ashlar pieces on either side and a tie beam supporting a king post. There are four additional similar trusses supporting the roof. The tiled roof covering appears to have been replaced at some point.
Inside, the northeastern wall has an inscribed block at the center that reads: ‘THE GLORIOUS DEAD’, followed by the names of the fallen.
