Description
The wall, gateway, overthrow, and water trough to the churchyard of St Michael date from the 18th century. The structure features stone coursed rubble walls and ashlar steps. The oak gate and gateposts are complemented by a cast-iron lamp canopy. The wall primarily serves as a retaining wall for the churchyard, extending approximately 50 meters to the north, east, and south of the churchyard, with the gateway located on the east side and a niche containing an iron water trough on the north side. The steps leading to the gateway have a shallow flight made of sandstone ashlar treads, flanked by small stepped walls. The 20th-century gate is set on likely 19th-century oak posts, which have carved caps, chamfers, and inset trefoils. The wrought-iron canopy frame over the gateway consists of two curved square-section bars with ornamental cusping that support a lamp bracket. This structure is included for its group value with the Church of St Michael, Manor Farmhouse, and Old Rectory.
