Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed church built in 1878 by T Nicholson of Hereford for Rev George Pardoe. It is constructed from coursed squared stone with stone dressings and features plain-tile and shingle roofs, complete with stone-coped gables and finials, reflecting an Early English style.
The church's layout includes a chancel, nave, a west tower integrated within the nave, a south porch, and a north organ chamber with a vestry. The exterior showcases a plinth, buttresses with offsets, and a continuous string course that acts as a hoodmould over most windows. The chancel features triple lancets on the east side, two lancets on the south, and a lean-to vestry on the north with small paired lancets and a northeast door. The nave has both single and paired lancets, along with a south porch that boasts a timber-framed entrance arch decorated with open-work trefoils, a quatrefoil, and ornamental bargeboards. To the west of the nave is a single lancet, and above it is a single-stage tower with twin lancet bell-chamber openings, a quatrefoil frieze, and a shingle broach spire.
Inside, the roofs are supported by curved braces to collars, with the west bay being boarded. The chancel includes an aumbry, piscina, and sedilia, as well as choir stalls and an open-work screen. The nave contains a pulpit, font, and pews, with some stained glass present. The narthex at the west end is formed by one large and two small open arches, with the large arch repeated to the north and south behind the arcade, all of which support the tower.
