Description

The Ainstable War Memorial Lych-Gate is a structure built in 1934 by Mr. J F Martindale. It serves as the entrance to the churchyard, located in the southern boundary wall. The lych-gate features walls made of coursed, quarry-faced Lazonby Fell red sandstone, supporting an oak timber frame and topped with a slate-clad hipped roof, complete with ridge tiles.

The design is rectangular, with the ridge oriented at a right angle to the pedestrian passageway beneath. The entrance passage has a symmetrical composition, featuring a chamfered Tudor-arch timber frame flanked by masonry carrier walls. Each of these walls has a shallow U-shape, with projections forming gate posts for a pair of ledged and braced palisade gates, which are fitted with a looped wrought-iron latch and strap hinges.

To the right (eastern) side, a low wall with flat coping stones extends forward and ends in a post topped with a pyramidal stone finial. Inside the left (western) carrier wall, there is a memorial tablet that lists the names of ten individuals who fell during the First World War. The plaque is inscribed with "IN MEMORIAM / 1914 - 1918 / (names in two columns) / THEY HAVE PASSED 'OUT OF THE WARFARE OF THIS WORLD INTO THE PEACE OF GOD'."

The timber frame is supported by moulded sill plates, with square posts at each corner and moulded struts, while the space between is filled with a pair of wall posts. The structure features wall plates and two tie beams that support the common rafter roof, which has exposed rafters. The rear elevation mirrors the front, except it does not include gates.
