Description
The Chapel of Christ and St Mary is a chapel built in the early 17th century, with restoration work carried out in the early 20th century. It features large blocks of dressed red sandstone and is topped with a graduated sandstone slate roof that has coped gables and cross finials. The structure includes a three-bay continuous nave and chancel, along with a west open bellcote. There is a 20th-century north vestry that has a flat roof and shaped parapets. The south door, made of oak planks, is set in a hollow-chamfered surround, and the round-headed windows have been restored. The east window consists of two round-headed lights beneath a hoodmould, which is also a restoration.
Inside, the chapel boasts a 17th-century open timber roof supported by kingpost trusses. There are two hatchment panels displaying the arms of the Milbournes of Armathwaite Castle. The chapel contains a stained glass window from 1914 by Morris & Co and another from 1915 by A.L. Moore & Son, London, based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. The west window, signed by Nicholson from London, dates to 1937. Additionally, there are various 19th-century white marble wall plaques commemorating occupants of Armathwaite Castle, along with furnishings and fittings from the late 19th century.
