Description
Bascodyke is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in 1747, which include the initials I.(&)R.S. on a rear lintel. It was originally the home of the Hodgson family. The building features rendered walls with raised painted quoins and a plain painted stone cornice, topped by a graduated slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and has four bays. The entrance consists of a plank door with a glazed segmental fanlight, framed by a pilastered surround with a triglyph entablature and a dentilled segmental pediment. To the right of the door is a three-light mullioned window with a moulded surround and glazing bar casements. The other windows are sashes with glazing bars and casements, all featuring moulded stone surrounds. Inside, the principal rooms have oak beams and carved oak doors. The name "Bascodyke" comes from a nearby dyke built for protection against border raiders.
