Description

The Church of St Michael is a church built in 1872 by G. Watson, located on the site of a medieval church. It is constructed of hammer-dressed red sandstone and features a slate roof with coped gables, a cross finial, and decorative ridge tiles. The church has a four-bay nave with a south transept and a two-bay chancel. The nave includes two triplets of closely set lancet windows, while the transept has double lancets with a circular window and plate tracery above. The chancel features both double and single lancets with hood moulds. Inside, there is a Norman pillar piscina with a decorated shaft, a heraldic graveslab dedicated to John Denton from around 1390, and effigies of John Aglionby and Katherine Denton from 1428, which were brought from St Cuthberts in Carlisle in 1778. Additionally, there is a wall tablet to Francis Aglionby created by M.L. Watson in 1843. The tower was demolished in 1983.
