Description

The barn and attached farm buildings located to the north of West Middleton Farmhouse date from the late 17th century or early 18th century for the barn, while the farm buildings are from the early 19th century. The structures are built of coursed rubble with roughly-shaped quoins, and the 19th-century parts feature tooled quoins and dressings. The roofs are covered with graduated stone slates, except for the wheelhouse, which has modern asbestos sheets.

The barn has lower ranges to the east that enclose a foldyard, and a wheelhouse is situated to the west. The elevations facing the foldyard show that the barn has a stable door in a blocked former cart entrance with a timber lintel, a small barred window to the right, and a slatted window above to the left. The gables are coped. The south range consists of a three-bay shelter shed with a partially blocked segmental arcade. The north range is divided into two sections: the left part features two stable doors and one boarded door, all with timber lintels, while the right part, set back behind a modern shed, displays two segmental arches with a boarded door to the right.

The end walls of the barn have boarded windows in the gables and a stable door at the south end. The wheelhouse includes a cart entrance under a timber lintel on the south side.

Inside, the barn has a storeyed south end, with first-floor joists supported by a transverse stop-chamfered beam. The upper room contains a small fireplace. The main section of the barn features a four-bay roof supported by raised cruck trusses, with the central and southern trusses having blades that rise only to the collar. There are two levels of purlins supported by extended tie and collar, and no ridge piece is present.
