Description

The lych gate to the Church of St. Mary serves as a memorial for the 1914-18 War and was designed by Thompson of Kilburn. It features an oak structure set on a base of roughly-squared stone with tooled dressings and is topped with a stone slate roof. The low walls, which have swept coping, support a timber frame. The gabled front has a Tudor arch adorned with carved spandrels, and there is a single gate with shaped stiles and arch braces in front of the rails. The sides include open-traceried panels beneath brattished tie-beams. The gable is decorated with vertical studding and moulded bargeboards on corbels, topped with a cross finial. The rear elevation is similar to the front. The sides also feature open-traceried panels, with a memorial plaque located on the south side. Inside, the roof is scissor-braced, and the area within and in front of the gate is paved with patterned cobbles and slabs.
