Description
The water tap and tablet opposite the Oak Tree Inn is dated 1868. It is made of roughly-squared stone and features a bronze tap set in a square-headed recess. Above the tap, there is a gabled tablet with a moulded surround that bears the inscription: 'THIS SUPPLY OF WATER WAS BROUGHT HERE FROM NEAR WARDEN HILL, A DISTANCE OF 1200 YARDS, AT THE SOLE EXPENSE OF CUTHBERT WATSON ESQ OF OVINGTON WHO FOR 60 YEARS HAS BEEN THE CONFIDENTIAL AGENT OF THE WYCLIFFE ESTATE, FOR WHICH GREAT BOON THE INHABITANTS OF HUTTON ERECT THIS TABLET TO EXPRESS TO HIM THEIR GRATITUDE AND HEARTFELT THANKS. October 5th 1868.' This structure is included for its historical interest.
