Description
The wellhead, dated 1870, is constructed from random rubble local stone with dressed stone voussoirs and features a blue lias tablet. It has a semi-circular headed niche for the well head, with a rectangular tablet set above the voussoirs. A tap is set into the niche, which has a horseshoe-shaped cover over the well. The jambs are made of random rubble, and there is similar rubble stone flanking the tablet, which is inscribed with a partially illegible quote: "Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall not thirst; that the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of ----- bringing ----- Everlasting life. September 29 1870." The tap and well are functional and were in good condition at the time of the survey in May 1985. The wall is made of random rubble local stone with hit and miss coping and fronts Oval Cottage and the adjoining cottage, featuring two gateway openings.
