Description
The drinking water fountain in Maypole is a roadside public feature built in 1897. It is housed in a decorative structure made of roughly squared and rusticated dressed stone. The structure has a steeply arched opening with stone voussoirs and a finial, flanked by short pillars topped with ogee caps. Inside the niche, there is a square stone basin and an iron water spout shaped like a fox's head. Above the basin, a cast-iron plaque reads, “ERECTED BY / LORD LLANGATTOCK / FOR THE BENEFIT / OF HIS TENANTS / & NEIGHBOURS / JUNE 1897.”
