Description
The barn at Church Farm is a large threshing and storage barn that showcases a strong regional character. It is constructed from roughly coursed sandstone and features a profile sheet roof. The barn has high doors located towards the center of the structure, supported by timber lintels, and tall ventilation slits on either side. The upper left section includes a small doorway on the right, a window on the left, and a loft opening above that is fitted with plank shutters. The lower right section has two doors on the right side, with an additional opening on the left that has been partially filled with brick, along with two ventilation slits above and a triangular vent at the gable apex. The rear elevation is obscured by a later lean-to addition.
Internally, the barn is unequally divided, featuring four bays to the right of the threshing floor and one bay to the left, with two additional bays partitioned off at the end. It has tie-beam and collar trusses with three tiers of purlins. The threshing bay retains its original stone flagged floor. The lower two bays on the right have been lofted, with ceiling beams that are independent of the main roof trusses. The upper two bays are separated from the barn area by a stone wall that supports a closed truss, which is finished with studding and horizontal boarding.
