Description
Newcastle Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attractive facade, primarily dating from the early to mid-19th century, though it may have been remodeled or added to an earlier house, of which little evidence remains. The building is constructed of white-painted rubble and has a blue slate roof that is hipped over the west end. It has a rectangular plan facing north and stands two storeys tall.
The facade is made up of two main sections. The larger part features a symmetrical design with two 16-pane sashed windows on the ground floor and three above. There is a central doorway with a part-glazed door that is sheltered by a gabled canopy supported by two posts. A large extruded rubble chimney is located at the east gable, and there is a ridge chimney to the right of this section.
To the right of the main section, there is a shorter part that continues seamlessly with the front wall and roof. This section has two large rectangular recesses on each floor that resemble blocked windows, but they are not, as the left recesses align with an internal partition wall (from which the ridge chimney rises), and the right recesses align with a chimney set slightly behind the eaves. Between these unusual features, there is one small 2-light casement window on each floor, with the upper window positioned relatively low at the same sill level as the sashed windows to the left. The roof over this section is also hipped, and in addition to the previously mentioned chimneys, there is a small extra chimney at the right-hand corner. The working doorway is located in the west end wall, while the rear of the building is almost completely blind.
No features earlier than the mid-19th century were visible.
