Description

The lychgate and war memorial to the Church of St Mary was built around 1920. It features a sandstone ashlar plinth supporting a timber frame and has a tiled roof. The single-storey gable faces the road, with a central post and ogee-curved struts, along with cusped bargeboards. Above the segmental arch entry, there is a cambered brattished tie with carved spandrels. The chamfered-top plinth rises to within 600mm of the tie beam, with small fretted panels on either side of the entry set into the side wall framing. The side elevations also display carved fretted panels between the frame. Inside, there are painted memorial descriptions on the structural members. This structure forms the road frontage of the otherwise rather bare north approach to the church.
