Description
The perimeter wall to the east, north, and south of the Almshouses, Nos. 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12, dates from the early 18th century and was heavily restored in the early 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with glazed terracotta and features a pitched capping. The wall encloses the garden to the east of the almshouses, extending to the river frontage, and stands approximately 1.5 meters high, ramping to the center of the east side where it meets two piers topped with ball finials (which have been restored to the north). An opening to the river, which was previously blocked, was reopened in 2000. This wall enhances the formal setting of the almshouses and provides an attractive border to the river. It is included for its group value.
