Description
The Almshouses are a building dating from 1712, with restoration completed in 1892. They are constructed of red brick, featuring painted stone quoins and dressings, and have a tiled roof with end stacks and two ridge stacks. The structure is single storey with an attic and has a front that is arranged in a 1:3:3:1 pattern. There are six hipped dormers above two-light small pane casements, each with raised painted keystones. The central section of the roof has a slight break and is topped with a pediment at eaves level, which displays a coat-of-arms and an inscription that reads:
"THIS HOSPITAL WAS FOUNDED BY WILLM ROLLESTON ESQR. WHO GAVE l00L PR ANNUM TO THIS TOWN FOREVER 66L APIECE YEARLY TO SIX POOR PEOPLE & THE RESIDUE TO SEVERAL OTHER PIOUS & CHARITABLE USES 1712 DEO SIT GLORIA".
There are boarded doors in three pairs located at the center break, set within the outer windows. The roof was raised during the restoration, which was done with sensitivity to the original design.
