Description
The lychgate to the Church of St Mary is an early 20th-century structure located in Caynham. It features an oak frame set on a plinth made of coursed stone rubble, topped with a plain-tile roof. The roof has a single clasped-purlin design supported by two trusses. Each truss includes a straight tie beam, collar, and struts, with a cusped brace positioned below the tie beam. The lychgate has two wall-frames that are supported by paired long straight braces, which are set on the plinth and have a chamfered top. There is a pair of timber gates, constructed with top, mid, and bottom rails that are braced with steel bars and mounted on pin hinges. On the south-west truss, there is a timber plaque that reads: 'ERECTED BY THE PARISH OF CAYNHAM/TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND/IN LOVING MEMORY/OF OUR DEAD/1914-1918'.
