Description

Upper North Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century. It features a painted timber frame with painted brick infill, set on a painted brick plinth, and has a plain-tile roof adorned with ornamental ridge tiles. The eaves line is raised on the rear pitch, and there are projecting brick stepped gable-end stacks, one on the right with a cogged cap. The building consists of a range of two framed bays with small extensions at each end.

The exterior is single storey with an attic. The front displays square framing that is three panels high, featuring three 20th-century two-light casements with lattice-leaded lights. There are two tiled gabled dormers with three-light casements and a 20th-century tiled gabled projecting porch. On the right side, the square framing includes rails, studs, and a brace, with a gable-end truss that has a cambered tie beam, four vertical struts, and a collar with raking struts. The single trenched-purlin roof is visible, and the gable is partially covered by a large brick stack with tiled offsets and a tiled lean-to outshut. The left side has a gable-end truss with vertical struts and a collar with twin raking struts. The ground floor is obscured by a lean-to extension that features an eyebrow eaves window with a casement and lattice-leaded lights. The rear has square framing that is four panels high with a straight brace, and includes 20th-century two-light casements with lattice-leaded lights, along with square framing in the lean-to side wall to the right and a two-light casement in the lean-to wall to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
