Description

The lychgate at the Church of St Mary the Virgin was built between 1919 and 1920, designed by Sir George Oatley. It features a timber frame resting on a limestone conglomerate plinth and has a tiled roof.

Located at the southern entrance to the churchyard, the lychgate is rectangular in shape. It has a stone plinth topped by a pegged timber frame, which supports a hipped roof covered in red tiles. The roof is adorned with a cross finial painted in red and gold. The timber frame includes deep posts with decorative gothic tracery and balustrades, creating pointed arched openings on either side. There is a pair of barred gates with decorative ironwork.

Inside, the wall plate features a carved scroll dedication, also painted in red and gold, which reads: "VITAM SALUTI PATRIAE PORT LABUERE (A.M.D.G.) IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF ‘NAMES’ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 18." The roof contains scissor braced trusses, and there are timber benches on shaped stone brackets flanking the passage, along with a dressed stone paved floor.
