Description

The Colonnade comprises a terrace of four houses built in 1786 by Samuel Powell, who did not complete the project. Constructed of brick with limestone dressings, brick party walls, stacks, and a pantile hipped roof, the terrace is of mid-Georgian style. It follows a concave crescent, with two near-symmetrical pairs, and the first floor projects upon a Tuscan colonnade with a timber entablature, stone cornice, and parapet; the ground floor is set back and articulated by fluted timber pilasters framing the openings. Each pair features an entrance with a 6-pane overlight, reeded transom, and a 6-panel door, the upper four panels raised with cut-out corners. A fluted sill band sits below two 8/8-pane sashes to the first floor. The projecting first floor has five stepped voussoirs above six 6/6-pane sashes, with wrought-iron basket balconies featuring arched railings and quatrefoils. Number 418 has a later, set-back attic storey. Number 414 is wider, with a third ground-floor window to the right and four first-floor windows.

The interior of the ground floor includes a full-width front room, an open flat arch leading to a raised rear room, and a dogleg winder stair with stick balusters and a ramped rail. Attached to the terrace are wrought-iron spear-headed railings and gates, leading to a flagged pavement below the colonnade and to the front garden. The building was originally erected by Samuel Powell as a row of shops intended for visitors to the hot wells, and represents a unique arrangement in Bristol.
