Description
The lych gate to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary dates from around 1875. It is constructed from local stone and flint rubble, featuring Hamstone ashlar dressings and a red tile roof adorned with crested ridge tiles. The lych gate has stone walls on either side with weathered offsets at each end. Each end also has pairs of corbels that support a moulded oak wall plate. The tall, steeply pitched roof is supported by an outer arch-braced truss, which is closed above collar level with studs and panels that are carved with Perpendicular tracery. A wrought iron cross surmounts the roof. The gate consists of oak double gates, with the outer stiles featuring fleur-de-lys finials and the inner stiles having scrolled finials. Above the lock bar rail is a panel with a diagonal brace and cusped arcades above and below it, while below the lock bar rail is a herringbone arrangement of diagonal boards. The lych gate is set back from the road, with low stone rubble quadrant walls curving outwards to square-section terminal piers capped with Hamstone pyramids.
