Description

Manor Lodge is a cottage that was formerly the lodge of Upottery Manor, which has since been demolished. It dates from around 1850 and is constructed of local flint rubble laid in rough courses, with limestone ashlar quoins and detailing. The building features stone rubble or brick stacks topped with limestone ashlar chimney shafts and has a slate roof.

The lodge has an L-shaped plan, with the two main rooms facing east towards the road and an axial stack positioned between them. A one-room kitchen extends at right angles to the rear of the north end and has a gable-end stack. The entrance porch is located at the rear, in the angle of the two wings, and the lodge is single storey, designed in the Tudor style.

The exterior has a two-window front. The left bay is gabled and slightly projects forward, featuring a bay window with a hipped roof that contains a large three-light mullion-and-transom window made of limestone. To the right is a two-light window in the same style, and the left end also has a two-light mullion-and-transom window. Similar windows are found at the rear, all of which retain mostly original rectangular panes of leaded glass. The main block has a hipped roof on the right and a gable end on the left, which includes an uninscribed shield-shaped plaque. The porch and doorway are adorned with Tudor arches.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is believed to contain mostly original joinery details. This picturesque former lodge is part of a group of attractive listed buildings in the village of Upottery, most of which were built in the 19th century by Lord Sidmouth.
