Description

This is a pair of villas located within a planned group in Nelson Gardens, Stoke, Plymouth, dating from the 1860s. The villas are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, featuring a dry slate mansard roof supported by a bracketed entablature. There are eight pedimented dormers and stuccoed end stacks with a moulded entablature.

The design follows a double-depth plan and exhibits a symmetrical facade with a 1:1:2:2:1:1 window arrangement. The windows are horned sashes within moulded architraves. A prominent feature is the large tripartite stair windows with a central opening and broken pediments resting on consoles, positioned on either side of the main facade.

Two-window-range porches include parapets with a moulded entablature and distyle pedimented doorways supported by Tuscan columns. These doorways are flanked by inner keyed architraves, overlights, and panelled doors. The rear elevation mirrors the front with similar roof and eaves details, alongside full-height canted bays at each end, above which are smaller canted dormers behind balustrades.

The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to possess architectural interest. The villas form part of a distinctive planned group of semi-detached villas.
