Description

This is a pair of houses, built in the early to mid-19th century, now combined into a single dwelling. They are located on Nelson Gardens, Stoke, Plymouth, originally part of Devonport. The houses are constructed of stucco and have a slate hipped mansard roof concealed behind a moulded parapet. Six dormers with six-pane sashes pierce the roof. The design follows a double-depth plan with narrow wings set back on the left and right sides; the houses were originally a mirror-image pair, each with two front rooms and paired central entrance halls.

The three-story facade, over a basement, originally presented a symmetrical six-window arrangement. Rusticated quoins are visible on the ground floor to the left. The windows are primarily original hornless sashes with glazing bars, and some copies with horns; the windows on the second floor are noticeably shorter. A central, two-column-in-pediment (distyle-in-antae) plain Doric porch features a moulded entablature. The doorway on the right side is round-arched, with a spoked fanlight and panelled door behind. The other doorway has been reduced in width and fitted with a sash window.

The interior has not been inspected, but is expected to contain features of interest. Subsidiary features include wrought-iron basement forecourt railings with arrowhead finials, and similar railings to the porch.
