Description
A pair of houses, likely built in the 1840s. They are constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble, with painted limestone dressings around the windows and openings. Number 2 (the left-hand house) is also painted. The roofs are steep and covered in slate, with gabled attic windows to the front and rear. There are large stone chimney stacks built out to the ends of the gables, and a tall brick chimney stack to the rear of the service wing. The architectural style is Tudor Gothic.
The houses have a double-depth plan, with a single-storey service wing at the rear centre, and a paired entrance hall centrally located. The front has a four-window arrangement. Mullioned windows are set beneath relieving arches and hood-moulds to both the ground and first floors; the ground floor windows are three-light, while the first floor has two-light windows and the attic windows are single-light. The window in the bay to the ground floor of Number 2 was replaced in the late 19th century. A pair of four-centred arched doorways are centrally placed, with sunken spandrels.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Together with Numbers 3 and 4, these cottages form a complete and distinguished example of a semi-detached villa design in the Picturesque style.
