Description
Numbers 3 and 4 are a pair of mid-19th century villas located in Collingwood Villas, Stoke, Plymouth. They feature incised stucco with stucco detailing and have a dry slate hipped roof that includes a moulded entablature with dentils and paired brackets. The roof has dormers with segmental pediments and sashes, while the wings have pediments on the end gables and oculae. The villas have a double-depth plan with narrow wings set back at the far left and right, each house containing one room at the front, with entrance halls located on the left and right.
The exterior is two storeys plus an attic over a basement, presenting a symmetrical four-window front. The windows are possibly original horned sashes, with some sashes at the rear featuring glazing bars and French windows leading to balconies over canted bays on the ground floor. There are also two similar canted bays at the rear. The stucco detailing includes channelled rustication on the ground floor, a central quoin strip, and quoin strips at the corners. The canted bays are topped with moulded cornices that connect to a string course and are adorned with turned balustrades. The pilastered doorways on the left and right have moulded hoods supported by brackets and overlights above four-panel doors.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to reflect the high quality of the exterior. The property also features low rubble walls at the road front with limestone copings and three chamfered and panelled gate piers with plinths and moulded caps. This pair of villas is part of a well-planned group in the Classical tradition and is depicted on the 1867 map.
