Description

3 and 4 Nelson Gardens are a pair of villas built in the 1860s, located in a planned group in Plymouth. They are constructed from stucco with stucco detailing and feature a dry slate and asbestos slate mansard roof that is supported by a bracketed entablature. The villas have eight pedimented mansard dormers and stuccoed end stacks with moulded entablature.

The exterior comprises two storeys plus an attic over a basement, with a symmetrical entrance front that has a 1:1:2:2:1:1 window arrangement. The windows are horned sashes set within moulded architraves, and there are large tripartite stair windows with central open and broken pediments on consoles, located towards the left and right. The large porches on either side feature channelled rustication, with two-window-range porches that have parapets with moulded entablature. The doorways at the left and right are distyle pedimented, supported by Tuscan columns, and include inner keyed architraves, overlights, and panelled doors. The rear of the villas has similar eaves and roof details as the front, with full-height canted bays at the left and right, topped by smaller canted dormers behind balustrades.

Inside No. 3, there is a moulded band with roses in the vestibule, a moulded cornice with carved modillions in the entrance hall, and an open-well staircase featuring an open string, turned balusters, and a turned and carved newel. The interior also includes some old chimneypieces, including an Edwardian Baroque chimneypiece in the stair hall. These villas are part of a distinctive planned group of semi-detached villas.
