Description

A pair of villas, dated to the mid-19th century and located at Collingwood Villas in Stoke, Plymouth. The villas are constructed with incised stucco and have dry slate hipped roofs. The roofs feature a moulded entablature with dentils and paired brackets. Wings extend from the main body of the buildings and have pedimented gables with circular windows (oculi) in the returns. Original dormer windows, with segmental pediments and gables, are also present. A large central chimney stack rises axially. The buildings are designed with a double-depth plan, with narrow wings set back on the left and right. Each villa features one room at the front, and entrance halls are positioned to the left and right.

The exterior presents a symmetrical four-window facade over a basement level. Windows are original sash windows, many retaining small horns and glazing bars. Stucco detailing includes channelled rustication to the ground floor, with the entrance bays projecting forward and featuring alternating vermiculation, as well as false quoins. Openings are pilastered and have moulded hoods resting on consoles, linked by a string course. Quoin strips define the first floor, and similar hoods with consoles appear over the windows of the wings. The rear elevation displays a six-window range with similar detailing.

The interior of No.2 is reported to be virtually complete and unaltered, retaining many features of interest, although the interior of No.1 has not been inspected.

Subsidiary features include low rubble walls along the road frontage, topped with limestone copings. Three gate piers are present, made of chamfered and panelled stone with plinths and moulded caps.

The villas are part of a well-planned group of villas designed in the Classical tradition, as shown on a map from 1867.
