Description

Numbers 7 and 8 Collingwood Villas are a pair of villas dating from the mid to late 19th century, located in Stoke, Plymouth. The villas are constructed of incised stucco with stucco detailing, and have a dry slate hipped roof with moulded eaves and a central axial chimney stack. The design includes narrow wings set back on either side, each with a pedimented end featuring an oculus. Dormers are topped with segmental pediments. The buildings follow a double-depth plan, with one room at the front of each villa, and entrance halls to the left and right.

The exterior is symmetrical with a four-window frontage. C20 casements now occupy the window openings, replacing the originals. Stucco detailing includes channelled rustication to the ground floor, incorporating two canted bays with moulded cornices, linked by a string course and surmounted by turned balustrades. Pilastered doorways, with moulded hoods on consoles and overlights, are located on the left and right sides; the original four-panel door remains at Number 8 (right). The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest.

Subsidiary features include low rubble road-frontage walls with limestone copings, and three chamfered and panelled gate piers with plinths and moulded caps. The villas are included in the listing primarily for their group value as part of a well-planned composition.
