Description

A pair of houses, likely built in the 1840s in Plymouth. They are constructed from limestone rubble with painted limestone dressings around the windows. The roofs are steep with coped attic gables, covered in dry slate on the left-hand side (No.4) and asbestos slate on the right-hand side (No.3). The chimney stacks are made of dressed stone and there are decorative kneelers on the gables.

The houses are designed in the Tudor Gothic style, with a double-depth plan that includes paired entrance halls in the centre. They are two storeys high, with an attic above, and have a cellar below. The front facade is symmetrical and has four windows. The windows are mullioned, though the mullions have been removed from those in No.3; they are fitted with hoodmoulds under relieving arches and have original hornless sashes in No.4. The ground-floor windows are three-light, the first-floor windows are two-light, and the attic windows are single-light.

The central doorways are four-centred arches with sunk spandrels, and No.4 retains an original mullioned overlight. The interior of No.4 is reported to be largely original, though the interior of No.3 was not inspected. Together with Nos 1 and 2, these cottages represent a well-preserved example of a semi-detached villa design in the Picturesque style.
