Description

PLYMOUTH

SX4655 COLLINGWOOD VILLAS, Stoke 740-1/42/650 Nos.5 AND 6 and attached front walls and gate-piers

GV II

Pair of villas. Mid C19. Incised stucco with stucco detail; dry slate hipped roofs over moulded entablature with dentils and paired brackets and pediments to end gables of wings with oculae; roof dormers with segmental pediments. Double-depth plan with narrow wings set back at far left and right, each house with 1 room at the front and there are entrance halls at left and right. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic over basement; overall symmetrical 4-window front. Probably original horned sashes. Stucco detail includes channelled rustication to ground floor including the 2 canted bays to ground floor with moulded cornices, linked to string, and surmounted by turned balustrades. Rear is 6-window range and has 2 canted bays to centre. INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to reflect the high quality of the exterior. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: low rubble road-frontage walls with limestone copings ramped up to gate-piers and 3 chamfered and panelled gate-piers with plinths and moulded caps. Part of a fine planned group in the Classical tradition. Shown on 1867 map.
