Description

Numbers 5 and 6 are a pair of mid-19th century villas located in Collingwood Villas, Stoke, Plymouth. They feature incised stucco with decorative stucco details and have dry slate hipped roofs. The roofs are adorned with a moulded entablature that includes dentils, paired brackets, and pediments at the end gables of the wings, which also have oculae. There are roof dormers with segmental pediments. The villas have a double-depth plan with narrow wings set back on the far left and right, with each house containing one room at the front and entrance halls on either side.

The exterior is two storeys plus an attic over a basement, presenting a symmetrical four-window front. The windows are likely original horned sashes. The stucco detailing includes channelled rustication on the ground floor, which features two canted bays with moulded cornices linked to a string course and topped with turned balustrades. The rear side has a six-window range and two canted bays at the centre.

The interior has not been inspected but is expected to reflect the high quality of the exterior. The properties also have low rubble walls at the road front, with limestone copings that ramp up to the gate-piers. The gate-piers are chamfered and panelled, featuring plinths and moulded caps. This pair of villas is part of a well-planned group in the Classical architectural tradition and is depicted on an 1867 map.
