Description

A pair of villas, built in the early 19th century as part of a planned group, designed by John Foulston. They are located on Penlee Gardens in Stoke, Plymouth. The villas are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, featuring a dry slate hipped roof with a modillion cornice and a pediment over the central two bays. Rendered stacks are at each end. The plan is of a double-depth format, with deep service wings at the rear left and right, and entrance porches set back on the return elevations.

The two-storey garden front is symmetrical, with four bays, and includes a plinth and end pilasters. Late 19th-century sash windows are present on No. 9 (right), while No. 8 has 20th-century windows. First-floor windows are under moulded hoods supported on consoles. Ground-floor windows feature corner pilasters, a moulded entablature, and turned balustrades above. The windows in the central bays are tripartite. The porches have moulded entablatures and paired columns on the return elevations; No. 8 has glazed doors, while No. 9 retains its original panelled doors. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. These villas are a notable example within their original landscaped setting and constitute a significant group in a national context.
