Description
Briantspuddle War Memorial is a slender, tapering shaft made of Portland stone, standing approximately 7.5 meters tall and topped with a small square cross. On the north face of the shaft, there is a sculpted figure of Christ holding a downward pointed sword in his left hand, while his right hand is raised to show stigmata. This figure is positioned on a small ledge beneath a canopy. On the south face of the shaft, lower down and touching the pedestal, is a seated figure of the Madonna suckling Christ, also on a ledge and beneath a canopy that features a relief carving of the Agnus Dei, supported by small Purbeck columns.
The pedestal of the memorial has inset panels that display inscriptions and names, creating the appearance of being framed by a triple colonnade of Romanesque arches on each face. It stands on a four-stepped tiered plinth surrounded by paving.
The main inscription wraps around the plinth, starting on the north face with the words "IT IS SOOTH THAT SIN IS CAUSE OF ALL THIS PAIN / R I P / (NAMES)," continuing on the west face with "BUT ALL SHALL BE WELL AND ALL SHALL BE WELL," and on the south face with "AND ALL MANNER OF THING SHALL BE WELL." The east face is dedicated to "THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 1919 / (NAMES)," listing seven names from the First World War. Six names of Second World War casualties were later added to the south face, along with the years "1939 1945" below the original First World War inscription. The quotation is from the 15th century work of Julian of Norwich.
