Description
The Hartley Wintney War Memorial is a limestone structure approximately 3.2 meters tall, located at the northern boundary next to St John the Evangelist Church, facing north and overlooking part of The Common. It features a Latin cross with a tapering shaft set on a plinth, flanked by curved walls that end in stone piers, which bear inscriptions.
At the center of the cross head, a crown of thorns is carved in relief, surrounding the Chrismon of St Ambrose. The shaft of the cross has a reversed sword carved in relief. The top of the plinth displays the dates 1914-1919 in raised lettering, accompanied by a decorative wreath carved in relief. At the foot of the plinth, there is a later addition of the dates 1939-1945, also in relief.
The eastern flanking wall is inscribed with "BEING DEAD THEY LIVE," and lists the names of 42 servicemen who died in the First World War, recorded alphabetically along with their rank and regiment. The western wall bears the inscription "BEING SILENT THEY SPEAK," listing an additional 41 names. The names of those who served in the Second World War are recorded below the First World War names. The piers at either end of the flanking walls indicate the locations where servicemen lost their lives: the eastern pier lists FRANCE, BELGIUM, ITALY, EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST, and includes THE SEVEN SEAS; the western pier lists GALLIPOLI, SALONIKA, PALESTINE, AFRICA, FAR EAST, and includes EGYPT and MESOPOTAMIA. All lettering is incised and painted black.
The memorial is set on a base of three semi-circular steps.
