Description

St Kitts House, Hartley Wintney, is an early 19th-century building of two storeys, originally designed with a symmetrical front of three windows, later extended to the west by a single window. The building has a low-pitched slate roof. The walls are red brick in a Flemish bond style, with rubbed flat arches, stone cills and a plinth. The windows are sash windows, alternating between single-light and three-light designs. A good doorcase is located in the original central position, featuring an open pediment, a broken entablature above pilasters, an arched doorway with a fanlight, and panelled reveals, enclosing a six-panelled door. The western unit of the ground floor contains an early shop front. Around 1840, a balcony or canopy was added to the west, featuring a pelmet edge and delicate wrought-iron railings. Below this is a symmetrical, plainer shop front of a smaller width, with a panelled dado.
