Description
Monachus House, formerly known as District Council Offices, is an early 19th-century building located on the north side of High Street in Hartley Wintney. The building features a symmetrical facade that rises three storeys and has five windows. It is topped with a slate hipped roof that has wide plain eaves. The red brickwork is laid in Flemish bond and includes rubbed flat arches and stone cills. The windows are sashes set in reveals, with Victorian sashes on the first floor and original sashes on the second floor and at the ends.
The entrance is marked by a porch that has a slab-like top, decorated with panels and reeding on the thin face, and a blocking course above. This porch is supported by two Greek columns and two pilasters, and it contains a round-headed doorway with a moulded architrave and an impost band featuring an egg and dart design, along with a fanlight above.
Later additions to the building include a short single-storey unit on the western side and a two-storey wing on the eastern side, which has three windows and a canopied door.
