Description

The Tarleton War Memorial is located on the north side of Holy Trinity Church and is made of limestone. It stands approximately 4.1 meters high and features a fleur-de-lis cross with the ‘HIS’ Christogram carved in relief at the center of the cross arms. The cross is mounted on an oblong, chamfered, tapering shaft, which rests on an ornate plinth topped with a moulded cornice and regular rounded corbels.

The octagonal plinth is adorned with gothic tracery, featuring paired trefoils and quatrefoil rosettes of alternating designs, all carved in relief. Four of the eight faces of the plinth are inscribed with dates and names related to conflicts. The octagonal, three-stepped base also includes a general dedication. All inscriptions are made with painted lead incised letters.

The base of the octagonal plinth lists the principal battles or campaigns of the First World War, inscribed one on each face. Starting from the western face, these are THE MARNE, YPRES, THE SOMME, SALONICA, GALLIPOLI, PALESTINE, MESOPOTAMIA, and MONS.

On the western face, the two steps forming the base have inscriptions; the upper step reads IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF TARLETON / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WARS / 1914 – 1919 1939 – 1945, while the lower step states THIS EMBLEM OF SACRIFICE / IS DEDICATED BY THEIR COMRADES / AND FELLOW PARISHIONERS.
