Description

Topping's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1651, as noted on the lintel of the inner doorway of the porch. The building is constructed of handmade brick, painted white, and has a slate roof. It features a three-bay baffle-entry plan, with a service wing at the rear of the third bay. The farmhouse has two storeys and includes a single-storey gabled porch aligned with a ridge chimney at the junction of the second and third bays. The wooden lintel of the inner door is inscribed with "1651".

There is one window on each side of the porch and four windows on the first floor, all of which are large rectangular alterations likely made around 1800, with modified glazing. The ground floor windows break the labels of earlier windows, and in the first bay, there is another label with its right-hand end stepped up, suggesting a blocked doorway to the right. The left gable wall, which slopes down at this end, shows remnants of a label above an altered cellar window, and the wall is set back slightly at the first floor, where there is another long label.

The rear of the farmhouse features a continuous label at ground floor level with two short and one long step-ups, a blocked doorway, and remnants of another label in the first bay. Various windows on the rear are similar to those at the front, including a two-light sliding sash on each floor of the centre.

Inside, the housepart in the middle bay contains two ovolo-moulded longitudinal beams that are tenoned into a full-width lateral beam (or bressummer) near the chimney stack. There is one chamfered beam in the third bay, and there were formerly two doorways to the first bay, one of which is now blocked.
