Description
The Trumpington War Memorial is a Portland stone structure erected after the First World War. It comprises a 5.8-metre tapering, four-sided cross, with relief carvings on the lower half of its shaft, set atop a low, approximately 1.2-metre square plinth which also features pictorial relief carvings, and standing on a three-stepped base.
The cross head is inscribed with the monogram “KR”, an abbreviation for the Greek “CHRISTOS”. The shaft widens at its midpoint, where moulded oval cartouches and arch panels begin. Four oval cartouches, one on each side, display a small pattee cross at the top and bottom, with nine names of those who died in the First World War carved between them.
The arched panels at the foot of the shaft feature four relief carvings depicting religious imagery: one of a seated St Mary with a baby, a cradle, and a lily plant; another of St Michael, a winged and haloed figure, confronting and defeating a dragon; a third depicting St George slaying a dragon and protecting a bound female figure; and the final panel displays a weary soldier, inspired by a design by David Jones, walking west into the sunset, carrying a rifle and showing the effects of his wartime experiences among damaged tree stumps, with a bowed head.
The plinth incorporates similar moulded arcading, creating three arches on each side. It bears the principal First World War inscriptions, along with Second World War names and dates, all in incised serif-based capital lettering. One principal inscription, beneath the St Michael carving, reads: “1914 / MEN / OF TRUMP- / INGTON / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES / IN THE / GREAT / WAR / 1918.” Beneath the St Mary carving, the inscription states: “FOR / LIBERTY / AND / JUSTICE.” The shaft displays the First World War names above the relief carvings. Underneath the carving of the soldier, the Second World War names are inscribed: “(NAMES) / 1939 / 1945 / (NAMES)”. Finally, underneath the St George carving, the name "JACK / CREEK" was added in 2014.
