Description
Portland Cottage is a detached cottage located in Melbury Osmond, dating from the early 17th century, with an earlier core and 19th-century changes to the windows. The exterior features coursed rubble-stone walls and a thatched roof with gable ends. There are early 20th-century brick stacks on the left gable and on the ridge to the right of the center. The cottage has one and a half storeys and includes four windows, which are wooden and iron casements with glazing bars, arranged in two, three, and one light configurations. At the rear, there are four two-light cast-iron casements. The front door, located to the left of center, is a 19th-century plank and weather-board design, with a thatched pentice porch canopy added in the 20th century. There is also a 19th-century plank door leading to a store at the right end of the cottage. Inside, the cottage features heavy-chamfered ceiling beams and a dog-leg stair positioned on the front wall to the right of the entrance.
