Description
Orchard Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The cottage features random rubble-stone walls with stone quoins and has a thatched roof with gable ends. There are brick stacks located at the center ridge and at the right-hand gable. The building is two storeys high and has four windows, which are two-light wooden casements with glazing bars, wooden cills, and lintels.
On the ground floor, the left side was originally used as stables and now has three blockings with wooden lintels above them. The front door, located on the right side of the ground floor, is a plank door from the 19th century, and there is a weatherboarded porch with a pitched slate roof above it. Inside, there is a ceiling beam with a straight chamfer and filleted stop, characteristic of the early 18th century. The fireplace at the north end has a renewed kitchen range, and there are cupboards with plank doors and iron hinges on either side of the fireplace. A doorcase stair is located on the rear wall.
At the left end of the cottage, there is an attached outbuilding that serves as a privy and wood-store, featuring brick quoins and door jambs, with a tiled roof and plank doors.
