Description
No. 414 Merrifield is a cottage dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob with later brick quoins and features a thatched roof with gabled and half-hipped ends, along with a gable-end stack that has a brick shaft.
The cottage has a three-room layout, with a kitchen and parlour on the left (east) side that includes a gable-end fireplace. On the right (west) side, there is an unheated bedroom, and at the center, behind an axial passage or lobby leading to the central front doorway, is a small unheated service room. There is a small late 19th or early 20th-century outshut at the rear, behind the kitchen.
The exterior is single-storey with a two-window north front and a central doorway. It features 20th-century two-light casements with 20th-century brick jambs, a glazed door, and a 20th-century wooden porch. On the rear (south) side, there is a central window that was originally a doorway but has been bricked up below a 20th-century casement, along with a brick lean-to outshut on the right.
Inside, the ceilings are plastered, and the kitchen and parlour have a 20th-century brick fireplace. The doors are made of planks, and the roof structure consists of pole rafters.
