Description
This is a cottage located at 442 Burts Hill in Colehill, dating from the early 19th century, with an extension added around the mid-19th century. The structure is made of cob on a painted brick plinth and features a thatched roof with gabled ends and brick stacks at the gable ends.
The cottage has a two-room layout, with a central entrance leading directly into the larger kitchen on the right (northwest) and a parlour on the left. Both rooms are heated by fireplaces located in the gable-end stacks. There is a small single-cell outhouse added to the right end, dating from the mid-19th century, and a WC attached to the left end.
The exterior is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical two-window front facing northeast, featuring 20th-century two-light casements. The attic has casements under eyebrow eaves with brick fronts. The outhouse on the right has a lower hipped thatched roof and a plank door, while a small WC outshut is located at the left end. The rear of the cottage is blind, and there are timber tie-plates at both the front and rear.
Inside, the cottage features later 19th-century joinery, including matchboard partitions, plank doors, boxed-in ceiling beams, and winder stairs. The kitchen fireplace is lined with brick, and while the attic chambers are ceiled, the purlins remain exposed. The outhouse has an exposed pole-rafter roof. This cottage is a largely intact example of early 19th-century cob construction with a thatched roof.
