Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church dating from 1893-95, designed by W.D. Caröe in an Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of brickwork in English bond, with a plinth, moulded cill band (stepped to the east and west windows), narrow buttresses with steep steps, and four-centred arches. The upper parts of the nave and vestry walls are timber framed, featuring decorative struttings with plaster infill. The roof is tiled.

The church’s plan is inspired by the Saxon Breamore Church, featuring a central tower with projecting arms. The tower houses the choir, while the short eastern arm serves as the sanctuary, the northern arm accommodates the organ and a staircase turret (with external access), and the southern arm is the vestry. The five-bay nave forms the western arm, which is wider than the tower. It also includes a south aisle and porch.

The tower dominates the exterior, with a pyramid roof, dormers on the north and south sides, timber framing to the bell stage, high-level small arched windows, buttresses to the east and south faces, and a stair turret with its own pyramid roof. A single arch defines the high east window (of three lights), while triple arches (the centre one being taller) are present at the west. The north wall of the nave has four large windows with triple lights and 'Tudor' details. The south wall has a lower eaves line and smaller windows, with the facade further varied by the porch gables, coupled dormers, and the recessed vestry.

Inside, the tower has high east and west arches, a low north arch, and coupled south arches, with light entering through the upper windows in the east and south walls. The nave resembles an elegant barn, incorporating arch-braced trusses, collars, king posts, plain pillars linked by cambered beams, and braced framing above the aisles. All furnishings are in the Arts and Crafts style, including a reredos, altar rail, pulpit, lectern, seating, and screens separating the vestry. An alabaster font with a decorated bowl sits on a baluster, and a statue of St Michael is positioned on a bracket at the east end of the 'arcade'. The church remains an unaltered example of its period.
