Description
Number 400 is a cottage dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later 19th and 20th-century additions. It is constructed of rendered cob on a brick plinth and features a thatched roof with half-hipped and gabled ends. The original brick axial stack was located at the gable end. The cottage has a two-room plan, with the larger room on the left heated by the gable-end stack, and a smaller unheated room on the right, with a staircase located behind it.
On the left side, there is a single-storey, one-bay addition built in the late 19th century, and a single-storey extension on the right side from the 20th century. The exterior is one storey with an attic and has a two-window southeast front, featuring small two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, attic windows beneath eyebrow eaves, and a central doorway with a glazed and panelled door, along with a 20th-century brick porch. The left addition has a three-light casement with horizontal glazing bars, while the right extension has a flat roof and is set back. There are casements on the ground floor at the rear.
Inside, the original fireplace has been blocked and replaced with a 20th-century fireplace. Some original joinery remains, including a plank door to the staircase and a simple balustrade at the top. The attic chambers are ceiled.
