Description

No. 56 Denmark Road is a cottage dating from the 17th century, which has been refaced and extended in the 20th century. It features a timber frame encased in brick, except for the end gables, which are covered in weatherboarding. The cottage has a gable-ended thatched roof that is now clad in corrugated iron sheets, and it includes a brick axial stack. The layout consists of a three-room plan with an entrance lobby in front of the axial stack. There are back-to-back fireplaces serving the central hall and the parlour on the right, while the left end, which is an unheated inner room, is currently used as an outbuilding. There is a 20th-century outshut at the rear of the right-hand room.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and features an asymmetrical two-window north front. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century metal frame casements with a flush panel door located to the right of centre. A small gabled dormer interrupts the eaves to the left of centre. At the rear, there is a plank door on the right, French casements in the centre, and a 20th-century outshut on the left.

Inside, the central room has a chamfered axial beam with cyma stops and a large fireplace that includes an 18th or 19th-century moulded shelf. There are also early 19th-century inserted cupboards with reeded moulding around the panels on either side of a small inserted fireplace. The roof space is ceiled, but the rafter ends are visible where the plaster has been broken, indicating that the roof structure is intact.
